Presentation: Multimedia Development… Easy as 1,2,3!

Dave Murray (INCORAS Solutions Limited) and Cliff Parris (ESPICO Limited)

As YouTube, Bebo, Facebook and a wealth of other content-sharing web applications go mobile, we can truly begin to believe that multimedia is everywhere! So with such widespread adoption of Media-rich applications on mobile devices, why does designing multimedia algorithms and building systems still remain a mysterious art reserved for a handful of dedicated specialists? While some elements of the design process remain very specialized, many of the development challenges can largely be addressed by leveraging Khronos’ OpenMAX IL standard, a cross-platform open API for multimedia integration on multicore platforms. This presentation will explore the challenges facing all stakeholders from algorithm developers, silicon vendors and handset OEMs when designing embedded multimedia software. We explore how each of the challenges can be solved using the OpenMAX IL standard together with a smart building block approach for (1) designing, (2) testing and (3) integrating multimedia software across a wide range of SoC platforms and application OSs. We start with the ARM Cortex A8/A9 NEON engine as an example media-processing engine running highly efficient OpenMAX IL audio codecs. We explore how these codecs are designed and tested and how silicon vendors and OEMs can integrate them with other media processing nodes using OpenMAX IL on a multicore SoC platform. We look at the current state of OpenMAX IL adoption and show how a common design methodology can be applied to a diverse range of SoCs and embedded Oss.
